Presentation Family Centre and Wilderness at Balnarring, Victoria
Six cottages, a community house, a children’s playground, an activities room and Reception Office on 45 acres, make up the physical amenities at Presentation Family Centre and Wilderness. In a rural setting, 5 minutes walk from a safe swimming beach and close to the local village, our wonderful facility welcomes families and individuals who would not otherwise ever have a holiday or respite because of the challenges they face.
However, it is the wonderful staff, volunteers and the families of all shapes and sizes who come who create the spirit of PFC. “To welcome all guests and to help them feel at home as they regenerate their spirits” is the hope of the Centre which can accommodate up to 50 guests at any time.
What makes PFC so special for many families is that they feel very comfortable bringing children with disabilities of one kind or another to holiday here. With the growing number of children who suffer from Autism and Aspergers syndromes, parents often comment that it is wonderful to find “somewhere” where their children are accepted and where their family can enjoy some time of relaxation and respite together. Darren, a young father with no appropriate accommodation to take his children for access visits, takes special delight in bringing the children to one of the cottages for these weekend visits. Carers’ groups also welcome a break from their 24/7 role of caring for a partner or child and return home renewed and refreshed. For many refugees it is the first taste of Australian countryside and relaxation that they have tasted with the opportunity to relate with other families.
Eight acres of the land are being restored to natural bushland and offer city folks the chance to have a sense of space and beauty and connection with our Mother Earth.
Sister Mary Keogh is a member of the PFC Board of Management and, as a resident member of the Presentation Community, has the role of Pastoral Carer. She brings a listening ear and caring heart to those who may want some adult company or an understanding ear.
Invariably our guests return home with a spring in their step and lighter hearts.
Typical of comments made by families are:
Exceeded our expectations! Thank you so much for a wonderful weekend away. Much needed family time!
The best five days I have ever had with my girl! - Grandmother carer
You guys do an amazing job! It is a fantastic place to come. We couldn’t have asked for a better holiday. Thank you!
