The Associate Movement is about charism rather than vocation. The issue of Associates is about breaking open the charism to share the ministry, so that religious and lay can work together collaboratively. It is authentic collaboration in that we mutually educate, inspire and develop the charism.

Today, often as a result of new situations, many institutes have come to the conclusion that their charism can be shared with the laity. The laity are therefore invited to share more intensely in the spirituality and mission of these institutes.

Over the past thirty years, the number of Associate groups and the diversity of their expression have increased markedly. As lay persons and members of religious congregations responded to Vatican Council II’s invitation to renewal, interest was sparked in ways of living common charisms in different lifestyles and of establishing helpful connections between them.

As lay Associate programs have developed, questions surrounding issues of identity, purpose and boundaries have also developed… Whatever the result, what will remain important is that the Movement itself remains alive and energized for the good of its members, the institutes to which they are attached and the life of the Church.
